I Can't Explain It

It’s true,
he was “flirting”.

But not like that girl
on Halloween
in West Hollywood.
She was really cute,
and laying it on as thick
as her mascara.
Batting eyelashes,
crooked smirks left and right.
I complimented her fingernails,
sharpened like arrowheads and painted black.
She looked at mine disappointed,
shook her head and told me no more biting.
She took off my mask,
whispered incoherent lyrical things
into my ear, rustled my hair.
She smelled like cotton candy and vodka.
She held my hand throughout the night,
took pictures with me,
danced with me to the terrible club music,
bossed me around the crowd,
dragged me into conversations with other random strangers,
told me about her experiences in the army,
laughed at my really stupid jokes,
admired the two scars on my bottom lip where piercings used to be,
made me ditch my drink to walk her to the bathroom.
She told me she wanted to kiss me by the end of the night.
She asked me for my number.
She even gave me a business card,
though it seems to have nothing to do with her now.
And I liked it.
All of it.
I said I was going to be right back
when I left her by the drag queen dressed as Cleopatra,
bought another expensive drink and eventually lost her
to the mouth of the massive crowd.
I know I’ll never hear from her again
and that it might have felt different come daylight,
but that’s okay.

Still,
I can’t explain why
this Thursday
I kissed the most rancid guy at the V Room.
It’s true I was drunk,
I was seven shots of tequila ($3 special)
and four rum and cokes in to the night,
but I don't kiss men, not in years,
and he never even tried to impress me.
He just said I had a nice hat.

Note: There's one positive thing that came out of kissing that guy though. I will not allow myself to get so carried away with tequila shots at a bar ever again. lol. Bluh! It was like kissing a mountain that wouldn't move. Stiff as a board. No chemistry. God dang it alcohol. Stop blurring my lines.

Everything that happens to us is a learning experience but not all of us can put it so lyrically, EDA. Thanks for the snapshot.

I know sincerity and honesty when I find it... in an animal, a tree, a sunrise or a sunset, in the ocean and a person. I know it when I hear it and when I read words suffused with it. This one has IT. And I love it!!!

That was really good. I saw everything so clearly. You painted a very
transparent picture.
Well Done.

thank you all for the comments on this one. i appreciate it mucho. this of all the poems i wrote this semester for workshop class was the most widely enjoyed by the class, also for the things you all noted such as honesty and telling a story. i've edited this now and made it more clean and aesthetically pleasing on the page. but again, thank you all.
