The Look
As I hold her hand,
Delicate fingers held in hers,
I see them looking.
Those who would look
With blatant stare.
Those who would peek through
Lashes and from behind fringes.
Those who give us the same look,
That they would give to the odd and absurd.
Each look I have noted,
Stored away as a reference for the next one.
A mental chronicle of those who would not see me,
Just the act that our hands are committing.
There are those looks that make me laugh:
The Novelty
Tha Notoriety
The look that says that I need to welcome you into my group of friends,
Because you two are just so fashionable right now.
There are those that hurt:
The Contempt
The Disdain
The Cover my Children’s Eyes
The Point and Stare
The Snigger and Sneer
The Pornographic Fantasy Whistle.
There are those that warm me:
The Admiration
The Recognition
The half smile and nod of the Sisterhood.
But none of these can be called my favourite.
That title must got to The Nothing.
No double take
No head turn
No recognition at all.
That is the look that says that your clasped hands are no more
Important than others might be.
You are not unique enough for me to care.
You are simply ordinary.
That is the look I love.

Oh Talullah, how beautifully you have said something I have always longed for...............the freedom to not think about, nor curtail any of my actions, words or displays of affection towards my love when we are in public. I long for this freedom NOT because I want people to notice, but precisely because I DON'T want them to. For my love for her to be so commonplace, so ordinary, so completely unremarkable that not a single head would turn. Well written!

thought provoking....don't we all know all of those looks.
I wouldn't want to be anonymous, though. I guess I like being a rebel.

I know this feeling...that need to be just one of the crowd...people always look...some stare...and one becomes the subject of the spotlights glare..
not a comfortable place if you're the kind of person who likes to get lost in anonymity...yes I know this feeling all too well
