Across the Aisle

One of these days
I am going to open my mouth
And get myself into trouble.
I wanted to ask you so badly.
Maybe if your daughter wasn’t there,
I would have.
Maybe if we hadn’t been sardine-packed
On public transportation,
I would have.
Maybe.
Your gender puzzled me.
I’m usually quick to piece clues together
But not today.
Would your nametag have read:
Butch dyke Mom?
Genderqueer, grown older?
Woman, previously transitioned?
Androgynous athletic coach?
Cis-woman?
Human being?
I know it’s none of my business.
I know
I know
But …
I suspect you have an interesting outlook on life.
I suspect I could have talked Gender Studies with you.
I also suspect you may be tired of people like me:
People who think they are aware
People who think they know better
People who actually know
Nothing.
Be certain, this I know:
Regardless of expression,
Everyone has the right
To be left alone.
Everyone has the right
To simply
Live.
Today you are everyone.
One day everyone
will be
me.

Thanks, Brach. The balance can be tortuous, but I try.

Actually I think it's a scale that has no exact balance point - that fine difference between our need to know and someone else's need to tell/discuss. Love the way you articulated this Eil.
