WANT

I don’t want to want you,
and yet at this moment I’m sure
that I have never wanted anything more.
You are always in my head
like a part of the brain that has not yet been probed
or some disorder I should be taking a pill for.

I don’t want to want you, but
the other night while your back was turned
I noticed the back of your neck was freckled
and I found myself wanting to kiss each one
like a dozen tiny foreheads.
I fought to look away but my eyes ran back every few seconds
like a coin too close to a magnet.

I don’t want to want, but
when your hair is pulled back
I have this overwhelming impulse
to brush the strands that hang around your face
to the back of your ears
like some object that’s out of place
and just waiting for someone to notice.

I (don’t) want to put every song that ever moved me
on an original mix tape for you (not CD)
like when I was 10 years old, buying blank cassette’s
at the 7 eleven, then waiting forever in front of the radio for my favorite song to play
just to prove my dedication in those hours and days it would take
to fill those 90 minutes between both sides.

I (don’t) want to hold your hand
on a proper first date
like a starved adolescent that cannot imagine anything feeling better
than that initial contact, skin on skin,
nerves immediately soothed like a common cold being nursed and fussed over.
When you’re sick I (don’t) want you to be my “poor baby”.

I (don’t) want to bring you flowers for no reason
other than to celebrate you being mine.
I (don’t) want to gaze into your eyes
and point out the full spectrum of colors
like stars in the sky that form a constellation.

When you’re back is turned
I have (no) desire to feel my fingers
crawl into the caverns of your shoulder and collar bones
like hands digging into the sand for a castle.

I don’t want you
is the lie I feed myself over and over
like a tube that’s been shoved down my throat for my own good.
But, within ten feet of you, I cannot deny the truth.
The want is crippling like a physical debility
that cannot be trained to heal.
It’s only when you leave
that I can continue the farce
and self- brainwashing that will inevitably wear off
when I see or speak to you next.
I will keep telling myself that I don’t want to want anyone
until then…….

Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh.....you just keep telling yourself that Brach. Ah, but we are the masters of self-delusion, aren't we?

Regardless of emotional content, there are some lovely turns of phrase in there. I particularly like

I fought to look away but my eyes ran back every few seconds
like a coin too close to a magnet.
