Not Single

At the wedding my best friend bride was getting ready
to throw the bouquet.

The single females eagerly gathered
at the center of the dance floor
ready to catch that potential deathtrap
of flowers meant to promise
the future holy union of man and woman.

You told me to get out there
and join them. I said I wasn’t single.
You insisted that I was.

I regretfully added myself to the crowd
of hopeful giddy girls to make you
and everyone else happy. You who still
dreams of my future marriage to a man,
and dream of it being exactly like this one.

But no, I wasn’t single.
I’m sorry you couldn’t accept it.
But I didn’t even try to catch the bouquet.

One day I might get married. But one thing is for sure,
it will not be exactly like this one. It will be better.
Happier. Liberating. Historic. All-loving. Same-sex.

It was only a few months ago now,
and I had been with her for two years.
I thought you liked her. I thought you
accepted her because she made me happy.

You’ve known for almost a decade
about the people whom I love,
you can pretend that it’s not true
for as long as you want to,
but my feelings will not change.

I love women, all shapes and sizes,
all talents and colors, all personalities
and hair lengths. I can’t help it.
Neither can you.

And even though I really am single now,
I would still never try to catch the bouquet.

Lovely and tragic, but good for you for not letting it impact your self respect and pride. So many in our community still do and live two seperate lives, one with family and another with their secret partners, it breaks my heart every time i see it. Nobody should have to choose between the two or live that lie.

Thanks very much, Brach. I sometimes forget that my family has not come as far as I would like them to in the acceptance of my relationships. I know they love me anyway. I won't choose between the two ever. Sometimes avoiding my personal beliefs to make them happy does occur. But overall, I do what makes me happy, even if it still bothers certain family members or makes them uncomfortable. Not my problem. I like my life and the decisions I have made.

(((((((((((((((EDA))))))))))))))))),

You are one. whole. woman: complete with or without another person.
Your family may come around in the future. For now, just keep standing tall.
