Holiday Difference
Families gather together, their bonds so plain to see.
I look at my family, and think of how thankful I should be.
My brother laughing in the kitchen at something my mother said.
Others gathered together sharing while I sit inside my head.
I can’t help but wander back to this day, just two years past.
Where I had nothing to celebrate, of my worries, food was last.
I didn’t have time to think about getting together and cooking a meal.
I was lucky to awaken every morning, I was too numb to feel.
On Thanksgiving there was no turkey, no warmth in my home.
I spent the day praying to a God I felt had left me all alone.
I find myself wondering if my family thought about me that day.
Did they say a prayer for me as they bent their heads to pray?
Looking around at the smiling faces, the love so evident in their glow.
So many things I wish I could say, so much they’ll never know.
This day won’t go on long, it’ll be over so fast.
I’m thankful this year is so unlike those of the past.
