Sketches in the Mirror

She doesn’t talk much you know. When she does, it’s usually kind of like she’s only doing it because she has to, and her mind isn’t completely focused on you. She’s quite witty, sometimes, and always makes sure that you feel important and listened to, but sometimes she just doesn’t tune in all the way. You get used to that though, it’s worth it to talk to her, or get her to smile or laugh.

She does most of her talking with her body. Her eyes are the most eloquent part. She has a way of looking at inanimate objects just like they are human, complaining about them obstructing her path, or falling off the shelf at her. Since she tends to be a human whirlwind, one who’s GPS got broken; a lot of stuff takes dives off of the shelves. Her theory is that inertia is one’s friend, and that if you keep moving, things are easier to hold together. It usually works, strangely. If it doesn’t, keep close, because the discussion she will have with it is usually very amusing.

But that’s beside the point right now. You have to see one of her looks to get the full impact. Ask her a question about how her day is, or if she needs help, she won’t even need to talk. Sparkling, fiery, sad, passionate or brooding, her eyes say everything that needs to be said. And they say it very descriptively; to the point that sometimes you want to tell her eyes to shut up. After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul aren’t they? She doesn’t hide her soul very well, although sometimes, you don’t want to see it. There are corners where the light bulb burned out, and you can only guess what’s hiding back there. One thing is for sure, if you’ve seen her eyes when she’s angry, or very sad, you know the things in the dark aren’t pretty, and they aren’t your friend.

Her lips are another part that speaks volumes. Almost always quirked, she seems to constantly be smirking at life, love and the human stupidity quotient. Combined with her noisy eyes, her face is always changing, always ready to talk. When she’s upset, there is no quirk. One could say her face is blank, except that to anyone who has seen her, you know there’s a world of emotion shown there. Her face is so stiff, such a mask, that it seems painful when you finally tease a small, unwilling smile out of her. Because that’s another strange thing about her. No matter how angry or hurting she is, there’s always another smile, or a little laugh hidden in there. You just have to know how to find it, and not let her scare you away with her war-mask face.

She talks with her hands now too. It’s still a new thing to her, being able to really express herself and feel that she doesn’t have to hide in the corner, but she’s learning. One shrug, sharing the emotion in her eyes, can tell you a lot of things. And the position of her hands, and her arms, will tell you the same things about her body that her eyes tell you about her soul.

Yes, she’s thoroughly mercurial. Laughing deeply one moment, bitter the next, then smiling ironically at some unobtrusive little thing, she’s hard to predict, and impossible to control.
