It was April 1st of that year...oh, not too many years ago. Spring was in the air, the Bradford pears were dressed up in white, the plum trees donned in, well, plum. Kind of a plum plume, you could say. Pretty. And there were daffodils in abundance. I had picked a few, a fistful, from the yards of various neighbors as I walked past their lawns, still shrouded in winter-dead brown. It's not my favorite color, that winter-dead brown. Grass just shouldn't die. It isn't right, you know? So, there I was just skipping along, with daffodils in one hand, humming to myself, loving the day. And I ran right into her. She stepped out in front of me, what else could I do? It was kind of a clumsy bumping of bodies, with a little squeal from her and a rather startled "humph" from me as I stumbled back a few steps and looked at her.
"Excuse me," I said politely.
She looked at me suspiciously, eyeing the daffodils. "You didn't get those from MY yard, did you?" she asked.
I quickly ducked them behind my back, asking "Get what?"
"Those Easter lilies."
I smiled in amusement. I think I might have even chuckled. Easter lilies, indeed. "Nope. Didn't get any Easter lilies from your yard," I said truthfully.
"Where did you get them?" she asked.
"I didn't."
She sighed. "You didn't WHAT?"
"Get any Easter lilies." I tried to look innocent, but I could feel another smile tugging at the corners of my mouth.
She growled a little. Hmm, sexy. "Why are you being so stupid?" she asked.
"Why do you care?" I asked in reply.
"Oh, don't be juvenile. If I get home and discover that you've picked my lilies, I'm going to be very upset with you."
Like I cared. I didn't even know her. "Well..." I glanced at the ground, then back up at her. I studied her clothes, her hair, her face. She was damn cute.
She seemed perturbed. "Well? What?"
I scratched my jaw. I scratched my head. I brought the fistful of flowers back around to my front. "I don't know if I got them from your yard or not." I wanted to tell her they aren't called Easter lilies. But I couldn't. She was just too damn cute.
She leaned a bit sideward and peeked around me, toward some place further down the block.
"Are they there?" I asked.
"What?"
"Your Easter lilies."
She was studying me now with a suspicious eye. "I don't know. I can't see that far."
I smiled. She didn't. I stopped smiling, and thrust the fistful of daffodils at her. "Here," I said.
She seemed confused. "What are you giving those to ME for?" she asked.
I shrugged. "Just in case."
"In case what?"
"In case your Easter lilies are gone." I wiggled the small bouquet of flowers a bit, in offering. "You can have mine."
She wouldn't take them. She shook her head and smiled, then simply walked away. I turned and watched her go. On April 1st of this year I will pick daffodils from her yard again. Only, this time, it is my yard, too. We also have Easter lilies. But I never pick those. We call them daffodils, just to be funny.

Tin, I really liked this!
They're sometimes known as Lent Lilies too. They're late here this year, it has been so cold.
