The Krell
This is not my story, but it's from a movie- Forbidden Planet- 1956- Walter Pigeon and more. It's in color and the special effects are pretty cool if elementary. Briefly- Millions of years ago a civilization who called themselves Krell reached an apogee of technical achievement and became extinct overnight. For many years they had been working on a project that they hoped would free them forever from the task of having to move and construct things. There project was designed to take their thoughts and turn them into reality. They constructed a machine composed of 40 shafts (9,000 cubic miles each) reaching down into the planet where they had constructed nuclear power plants of immense size. There were no wires connecting the Krell to the machine. The machine was activated by thought impulses of each individual Krell being. As a stupid example, if a Krell wanted a ham sandwich, she thought about the sandwich and where she wanted it and the machine would construct it for her out of available atoms. As with all great things and beings, the Krell forgot about the Id. The id is, of course, the name given to what has become known as the sub-conscious mind. So, what happened was the first night after the machine was completed when individual Krell went to sleep or whatever they did in place of sleep, they had dreaqms and nightmares. The great machine didn't know the difference between a ham sandwich and a nine-headed firebreathing beast with huge claws. So, with their demons having access to reality through the machine the Krell had no chance and their time came to an abrupt end. Of course, the movie is about what happens to some earthlings who happen to come across the Krell's home planet. If you saw the movie already, you will no doubt remember 'Robbie the Robot.' It's a great movie and a great story, if somewhat dated. Enjoy, Nataliet
