Watching

She sits alone at her table, a cigarette in one hand, the pen in the other. Her head tilted to the left side, as the words grace her page. Around her, people wander around, going about their business. They are oblivious to her musings, their minds barely registering her existence. She looks up from her page and smiles. No real reason for her smile, it is simply there. She taps her pen on the table as she looks around, taking in her surroundings. An average sized restaurant, buffet style, nothing spectacular. She notices the carpet and thinks to herself that it is probably the ugliest that she’s ever seen. The dark green color, mixed with what was supposed to be yellow flowers, appear gaudy and take away from the beautiful oak paneling lining the walls. She roams the pattern of the wood with her eyes, enjoying the peacefulness she finds in the continuance of its flow.

Slowly, she allows the sounds of the restaurant to catch her attention. The crowd is thick, and she hears a child’s laughter rise above the general chatter. It brings forth her smile again. Her eyes search out the source of the joyful sound. Halfway across the room, she spots a little girl laughing gaily. Her light blonde hair pulled back, and her pink outfit seeming to be an adorably perfect picture. No older than two years of age, the child was enthralled with whatever noises her father was making to induce her laughter. The watcher places her chin in the palm of her hand and continues to watch until the pair begin to leave the restaurant. The little girl’s hand resting trustingly in her father’s large one, walking slowly out the door.

She leans back in her chair and stretches, once again taking the pen in her hand to paper. Tuning out the voices, the clatter of dishes, and the tantalizing scents of food surrounding her. She lights a cigarette, and writes furiously in her notebook. The pages fill quickly as her unladylike handwriting flows from her hand to scrawl across the paper. She knows she is writing nonsense, nothing really consequential, but internally shrugs it off. She doesn’t care. She has accomplished what she set out to do. Her thoughts are clear and flowing, where earlier they were stuck jumbled in her head, begging to be set free.

She feels the thrumming of her inspiration beating through her body as she flicks her cigarette. She slowly closes her notebook. She places the cap back on her favorite pen, and tucks it behind her ear. She stands, and leaves a nice tip for the waitress that was intuitive enough to know that she’d wanted to be left alone. Purse on her shoulder, phone turned back on and tucked into her jeans pocket, she walks to the door. She looks back at the restaurant one last time, saying a silent thank you to the clueless inhabitants that have given her the inspiration she craved. Then she pushes through the door to begin her long walk across the darkened parking lot. She tosses her head back and laughs out loud in simple joy, in pure release.
