Free-Less Pt. 4

Part 4

Dominique saw one of her students walking towards them, she asked her to call 911 and get an ambulance. Sasha was still in pain, but her eyes began to slowly regain the pigments of color that were only a few moments ago, white. Sasha’s eyes had turned white and not only were they discolored, but she couldn’t seem to focus on anything. “Sasha! Are you alright? – Can you tell me what happened to you?” asked Dominique, not really expecting an answer, but she heard her mouth uttering the words before she could stop them. Sasha just laid there on the floor looking straight ahead, she didn’t focus on anything in particular, it was like she didn’t know how to use her eyes.

Dom began to wave her hand over Sasha’s eyes to detect any movement, and to her surprise Sasha’s pupils narrowed as she tried to focus on her hand, they were abnormally enlarged, the pupils were as large as the retina once was. Dom stroked Sasha’s head and whispered to her to relax and close her eyes until help arrived. “What is happening to me Dom?” whispered Sasha, in a very scared and pleading tone, “All I can hear is a ringing sound that gets higher and higher and it makes my eyes hurt so bad”, she cried. “Am I going blind Ms. Forest? – you have to tell me the truth!” She began to scream now over and over, “Am I blind, Am I blind- tell me? Dom didn’t know what to do or say, she had never seen anything like this and for some reason she felt a strange sense of peace wash over her face and neck. It was almost as if she had been touched by a soft electric glow, she felt the hair rise on the nape of her neck and her breath skipped a beat. She heard the voice that spoke to her from the mirror this morning, but it seemed so far away, she wasn’t sure it was really there. Suddenly, she had the thought to blow in Sasha’s ears, ever so gently, so as to warm them and soothe the excruciating ringing that had sapped the color out of her eyes. She knelt down and began to blow warm air into her ear and she felt her own breathing change as she began to breathe the sound “Shuuuuua” into her ears.

Slowly Sasha began to loosen her grip on Dom’s arm, she had been squeezing the life out of her arm, but Dom didn’t even notice until now. “What did you do?” asked Sasha. “It almost stopped completely, it is not so loud now, but my eyes still feel really weird”. “Hey, don’t try to move just lay there, here is a pillow one of the girls brought, help will be here soon”, said Dominique as she continued to gently stroke her forehead. “Where is that ambulance?” yelled Dominique, “It’s been over an hour, this is ridiculous!” The same girl that called the first time took it upon herself to follow up and see why there was still no help for Sasha.

The war of resources had been in full swing for almost six years and the economical affects left nothing and no one untouched. Medical care and the Hippocratic Oath were just things of the past. If a person got sick, he or she were on their own, insurance companies could drop them if they needed too much care or tests. The Security Acts were constantly being upgraded without many noticing anything at all. Many people were divided on everything imaginable from race to religion and the rise of gay rights and lesbian love was tainted by the violence that quickly took precedence not only in Iraq and Afghanistan, but on every poverty stricken street corner. In Iraq young gay men were hung in the public squares for all to see and lesbians were a free for all. In the Northern hemisphere, not many men took them serious, unless it was to watch them in porno movies.

Within every major corporation the sound of deterioration and desolation ringed through the fiber optics of every cell phone. Not many noticed that no true freedom could ever be won, all believed that every man, woman and child could gain freedom if they just worked hard enough and stayed away from the Conceptuals, a group branded with this name by the United Secure Safe Sentinels a.k.a. USSS, that maintained a variety of Cell Blocks that housed hundreds of Believers. The Believers were guilty of harboring fanatical religious thoughts by the Council of Free Philosophers, groups that maintained the standards of what was politically, philosophically and socially acceptable. When Believers were caught discussing or practicing any type of religious ideas they were sent a message on their cell phone indicating which cell block to report to for examination. But, lately more and more Believers were getting sick with flu like symptoms and headaches. Asthma was a common household illness for most children; it was slowly spreading to the adult population though undetected by many.

Nanotechnologists were promoting the use of small robots for biotechnology to control the growth of cancer and AIDS. Under the latest security act many were being sent to prisons and camps that were originally set-up for illegal alien processing in Napa Valley. Big Black helicopters were often seen around the area since the late 1990’s and yet still many people did not believe they were real, but were just the latest ramblings of UFO factions that sought to promote their own propaganda. Many people began to disappear and no one was safe from the oppressive will of the Sentinels.

The Windsor/Detroit Border Military outposts designed to keep the peace and maintain freedom loomed over the land like a big black cloud of smoke that never seemed to dissipate when the winds blew. The new RFID chips allowed them to detect the unique signal assigned to each person that crossed at the NEXUS posts. Jael, had recently discovered the Gnostikas, a group of ‘Intuitive Knowers’ that were considered the biggest terrorist threat since Saddam Hussein and she stood in fear as she looked above her head and saw the unmanned drones span the waters with huge spotlights and cameras looking for members of those that were able to ‘see’ that true freedom is a myth. She wondered if she would ever be able to find her girlfriend before the Drones spotted her.

I'm really enjoying this.

I do want to mention that the retina is in the back of the eye, I think you meant iris when describing Sasha's dialating eyes.

Also, it jumped to an unknown part of the story without a proper introduction or at least a divider from one part to the next. I got confused going from Dom waiting for the ambulance to suddenly being thrown into a world of war with Sentinals, Believers, etc.

Otherwise, once I sorted it out, I'm still anxious for the next. I like the world you're creating and wish for more.
