Scarlet Letter Ana

“Asshole!” a woman with short, dark spikey hair yelled out as she swerved around a beater car that cut in front of her. Ana Olson sped her blue BMW convertible through a yellow light. Ana pumped up her speed to 60 miles per hour. The posted speed said 40 miles per hour but she never paid much attention to those signs. She figured those signs with speed “limits” were just suggestions. Who actually paid any attention to those? Ana sure did not.
Ana slammed on her breaks at the following street light because she saw a cop sitting further up the road. Waiting. She knew the cop was sitting there to catch people like her.
She kept her foot on the break as she leaned over and popped open her glove compartment. She caught the speeding tickets that flew out and shoved them back in as she rummaged in the ill lit compartment until she found what she was searching for. Her dark leather address book. Ana flipped through the almost obsessive compulsively organized book. The lean woman glanced up at the light and kept flipping through the thin pages, using the red glare off the street signals to read, until she found the page she was searching for.
Traffic was busy for ten thirty at night. Ana wondered what everyone was doing out so late for a Thursday night. She happened to have the next day off and was planning on heading over to the local queer bar to watch her favorite drag show. Tonight was a “drag-off.” She thought it would be interesting to watch men in tights and skin tight dresses try to out do each other in their performances. The winner was determined by the audiences vocal reaction to each queen. The winner walked away with $250 cash plus whatever tips She got. The completion occurred, usually, about once a month. Every now and again it was every other month depending on how many queens were actually available to perform. They did not want to hold a competition for an hour between two queens.
Ana flipped open her sleek black Razor cell phone and punched in a phone number. The numbers showed up in rainbow colors going from the first digit being red down to the last digit turning purple. She pushed the green talk button with her thumb and put the phone up to her right ear.
She listened to it ring for a few seconds until a quiet female voice came on.
“Hello?”
The voice sounded tired and had a tinge of annoyance in it.
“Marge, hello,” Ana said into the phone.
“Who is this and why are you calling at ten thirty at night?” The voice was definitely annoyed.
“It’s Ana, remember? From school.”
“Ana? Lesbian Ana or creepy stalker talks a lot Ana?”
“Lesbian Ana,” Ana replied laughing. The laugh was warm but at the same time very cold and fake. The laugh was a kind that hid the true meaning behind thoughts at hand. Was it actually funny that Marge remembered Ana only as ‘Lesbian Ana’? Ana did feel a slight relief at not being the creepy stalker Ana. Though, she did have her creepy secrets.
“Why are you calling this late? Wait, where are you?”
“I moved to Vegas. Aren’t you still living here?”
“Well, yes. I’ll never leave this town. Why the hell did you leave LA? You had everything there.”
“Yea, until I caught Susie cheating on me with Lauren. You remember Lauren right?”
“Yea. She cheated on you with Lauren? What the fuck is that? That’s crazy. Weren’t you and Suz together for like seven years?”
“Eight. It was our eighth year together and I caught them in our bed fucking like rabbits.”
“Damn,” Marge replied, shocked.
“Yup. So I packed up a duffel bag and got out of town.”
“So. Now you’re here in Vegas. How long have you been in town for?”
“About three and a half months now. I’m working as a secretary for a real estate company. They pay well and have awesome benefits.”
“Do you want o try and catch up more this weekend? I’d come out and see you tonight for a drink but I have an early work meeting that I need to be sharp for.”
“I don’t work tomorrow or Saturday so why don’t we make tomorrow a date for a drink?”
“Sounds good. Is this your cell? Sounds like you’re driving.”
“Yea. This is my cell and I’m driving out to a bar right now,” Ana stepped on her breaks hard and barely missed a construction cone and a sign that said to merge lanes. Somehow she’d completely missed seeing the neon orange signs.
“I’ll give you a call tomorrow during my lunch break. Drive safe.” Marge sounded sincere even though she and Ana hadn’t spoken in just over a year.
“I will do so. I should probably get off the phone since I’m playing chicken with traffic cones right now.” Ana chuckled quietly at the thought of traffic cones dodging out of the BMW’s way.
“Have a good night.”
“You too, Marge. Sorry for calling so late.”
“It’s fine. Just call before nine next time you want to chat,” Marge yawned into the phone.
“Yes ma’am. I’ll make sure to do that. Goodnight.”
Ana flipped her phone shut and tossed it onto the passenger seat. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair while she steered with the other.
“Drive safe, she said,” Ana said aloud. “She doesn’t know the new Ana yet. The ‘Lives Dangerously and Viciously Ana.’
Ana slowed down anyway with Marge’s words in her head asking her to be safe on the road. Ana drove by a Wendy’s and made a right at the following light and then a left into the packed parking lot of the queer bar. It was always a popular night when the drag-offs occurred. Ana slid her Beemer into a spot a Mazda pulled out of. She pocketed her keys and checked her face and hair in her side mirror before walking up the ramp to the front door.
“ID,” a big burly man aid stopping Ana.
Ana fished out her ID from the back pocket of her Wrangler jeans and gave it the bald bouncer. H elooked like the type of guy who could pick someone up by the throat with one hand like it was nothing.
“Alright,” the bouncer said handing Ana her ID back after glancing at her face and the photo with her birthday.
Ana slid the ID back into her pocket and walked in. She stopped out of the doorway and looked around at the crowd. It was fairly packed and for the most part was only standing room. The crowd at The Crescent was always very mixed. There were the most flamboyant gay boys that anyone had ever met to the crew cut bull-dykes to the post-op trannies. Tonight there were more men in the bar than women. The single men were always happy to get a little attention from the queens. A slight touch on their face or a hand trailing down their chest and stomach. It was all part of the queens’ acts. Ana tended to be a good tipper and in the bar frequently so was well liked by the regular queens.
Ana pushed through the crowd to the bar and yelled over the noise, “Hey Luke!”
“Ana! The usual?” Luke replied leaning over the bar towards Ana.
Luke poured Ana’s drink; Jacky-D with a touch of coke for taste with four cubes of ice.
“Four bucks,” Luke yelled at her.
Ana handed Luke a ten. She looked around while Luke went to get her change. She saw a man leaning against a wall near a group of people. She knew his name was Jesse and that he was always here at The Crescent at about eight in the evening and didn’t leave until about two in the morning. Jesse caught Ana’s eye and tried to wave at her. As soon as he stopped leaning on the wall he nearly fell forward tripping over his feet. He laughed loudly and quickly caught the wall again for support. Ana smiled a little and turned back to the bar to take her change from Luke who had returned. Ana left him a three dollar bills on the bar. Luke scooped up the bills.
“Thanks, baby!”
Ana left the bar and pushed her way towards the dance floor where the competition was going to take place. She thought about grabbing a bite to eat but decided to just find a free place to stand.
A remix of ‘Man Eater’ blared through the giant speaker she walked by. Ana glanced at the girl who thought she would try a hand at the stripper pole in the middle of the dance floor. It never failed. Everytime Ana came into the bar there was always someone who thought they were the shit on the pole. She loved it when Dee, one of the queens, did her act on the pole and showed off her abilities. Every pair of eyes was always glued to Dee when she danced.
Ana sits at the one free table, close to the dance floor, and sets her drink down. She scooted back against the booth so she was sitting across the whole seat. She rested her arm up on the seat top. There was a cat’s claw vine tattooed up her arm. The intricate design creeped from her elbow and spread up over her shoulder and disappeared under her tight white tank top. The ivy grew all the way around her biceps and triceps and looked almost as if it were constricting around her arm, getting tighter and tighter until there was no more ability for blood to flow to her hand.
As Ana sat at the booth, watching all the drunk gays dance, a group of women walked by her. As she looked up she caught the eye of one of the women. Ana stared after her as she walked by with her group of friends. The woman had short hair but was still long enough to style. She had on black, slightly baggy, Dickies and a white button up shirt with thin black vertical stripes. The sleeves were rolled up above her elbows.
They all joined a couple that was sitting at the booth two away from Ana. The woman that had caught her attention stayed standing and leaned against the wall with one foot on the wall. She crossed her arms and put her hands in her arm pits and stood quietly as her friends all laughed noisily and hugged each other. Ana looked away and sipped her drink coolly.
Ana glanced over at the woman in the dickies. She had lit up a cigarette and was blowing a cloud of smoke to the side away from her friends. Ana noticed she had three peircings in her left ear. Her jaw was very defined. So kissable. She could lick down that defined jaw with her hot wet tongue, Ana thought.
Ana felt someone staring at her. She shifted her look up and noticed the woman staring back at her. Ana felt her face get hot and quickly looked away.
A giant gong sounded through the speaker near Ana. She jumped in her seat and nearly spilled some of her drink.
“Dykes! Fags! And you miscellaneous folk! Welcome to the start of the Queen-Off! Where you make the most noise for who you think should win. Each queen performs four songs. The winner will be decided at the end. Let’s make some noise for your host-ess Deevine, the winner of the competition for the last three months.” The speaker fell silent as everyone in the bar starting clapping, screaming and stomping their feet. It was all the norm as far as the competitions went.
Ana clapped along with the rest of the crowd. Two men walked over with drinks in hand and stood right in front of where she was sitting. One looked as if he were in his early thirties and with a bit of a belly on him but was also balding and badly at that. His friend or his partner, more likely the latter, was quite the opposite. Very thin, dressed well, great hair and looked as if he were no older than 25. He had one of those sweater vest things on. Ana didn’t get why gay men wore them.
Deevine had stepped out onto the stage dressed in all black. Madonna. Deevine had on a blonde wig, black lace top with sheer long sleeves underneath a bodice. There was also a large black bow underneath Deevine’s chin, black pants that looked like spandex, and of course knee tall black leather boots. The heels on those looked dangerous. Dee always pulled off Madonna the best.
“Welcome all to another night of Queen-off!” Dee’s voice was a deep baritone and sounded funny since he was dressed as an amazing Madonna. “Tonight our performers are Ginger Snap, Lilly Pond and myself, Deevine. Anya Tension was going to perform tonight but got called away to a family emergency. She’s probably out in the alley if any of you boys want a little action. No Lesbos though unless you’re paying Anya.”
The crowd laughed at Dee. Deevine was always making some sort of smart ass comments about the other queens or about the audience members. He seemed to be keeping it fairly low key tonight.
The gay couple was still standing in front of Ana, absolutely clueless that they could possibly be blocking someone’s view. Ana stood up part way and tapped the older fag on the shoulder.
“Would you mind stepping out of the way a little bit? I’d like to be able to watch the show you know.” She was as polite as she felt like being right at that moment.
“There isn’t any room,” the bald one stated as he moved over about one inch.
Ana sat back in the booth irritated. She wanted to watch the show without trying to look through rude gay fucks. She tapped her fingers on the table and kept sipping at her drink. The competition had begun and she could barely see around the men.
Annoyed, Ana got up with her drink and walked over to lean on the same wall that the woman with the friends was leaning on. She tried hard not to look up at the woman as she walked by her and stood on the other side of the wall from her.
One of the queens was dancing around and lip syncing the Katy Perry song, Hot N Cold. It was catchy that’s for sure. Ana mouthed the words and shifted her arm to get more comfortable. Her elbow grazed against the other woman’s arm. She cleared her throat in apology and shifted again.
Ana set her drink down on the ledge next to her and dug in her pockets for the pack of marlborlos she brought with her. She pulled out the pack, shook out cig and slipped it between her lips. She shoved the pack back into her pocket and dug back into her pockets for her lighter.
“Fuck,” she cursed not finding it. Ana turned to the woman opposite of her and feeling her face turn red asked, “Do you have a light? I think I left mine out in the car.”
“Ya, sure,” the woman replied pulling out her lighter from her back pocket. She flicked the lighter and a orange-yellow flamed popped into sight. She brought the light to Ana’s cigarette and lit it for her. Ana caught her eyes and kept her gaze until she puffed her cigarette to life. She let out a breath of smoke before taking her eyes away.
“Thanks,” Ana said almost shyly. She didn’t get shy. Ana was always very vocal and sure of herself. Who was this that made her feel like she was in grade school again. She left her cheeks burning as she glanced away from the woman’s hands that she didn’t even realize she was staring at. It was just that they looked so strong yet gentle. Susie’s hands were like that, Ana thought.
She shook her head slightly, and went back to her spot leaning against the wall, trying not to think of the past. It was done and long since over with. Really it had only been less than four months since she’d killed the bitch but she still thought of her all the time. She started feeling a sort of rage climb back into her mind and kept her eyes on the stage where a different queen was now singing an Annie Lenox song. She was dressed in a black suit with a a white shirt and tie. The make-up, body and the hair all fit perfectly for the queen to be Annie Lenox. She was one of Ana’s favorites.
Ana dug out two dollars and folded them in half and stuck them out so the queen would take them. She came over and slid up her pant leg to reveal a black boot. Ana slipped the dollar bills into the boot and ran her hand up the queen’s leg and winked as he danced away to other audience members who were holding out their money. The rage she had felt started to dissipate as if it was nothing.
Ana picked up her drink and moved so she was standing against the corner of the wall instead of her back pressed flat against it. The corner digging between her shoulder blades felt good to her. Slightly painful but she liked it. She put herself in situations where she was always able to cause herself some sort of pain. It wasn’t always just physical pain. Actually, it was usually just emotional pain. She picked situations in relationships in which it couldn’t stay perfect and happy. There was always something she had to do. That’s probably why Susie ended up fucking Lauren. Ana had no idea how long they’d been going at it behind her back. It definitely wasn’t the first time though when Ana caught them in the act. Ana definitely was the one who’d had the last word in that situation.
A chill went through Ana’s body when she felt someone brush against her bare arm. She glanced over slowly and saw that the woman had shifted, closer to Ana, so she could watch the show. Her arm brushed up on Ana’s when she lifted her hand up to take another drag off her cigarette. Ana started to look back towards the show when she felt her arm brushed up on her again. It was distracting. She usually would have just ignored it if it was anyone else. But she couldn’t with this woman. She was impossible to ignore.
Ana took a long drag of her cigarette and finished off her drink. Ana had to reach across her distraction to put the empty glass back on the ledge. She could feel the woman watching her. It was unnerving. She put her free hand across her chest and stuck in her armpit. She took a long drag off her quickly shortening cigarette and tried to focus on the show. She smiled at the song that Deevine was doing now. It was ‘Short Dick Man’ by 20 Fingers. She laughed as Dee went over to one of the men that had been blocking her view earlier. Dee was singing the song and showing with his pinky finger the length of the man’s dick. The entire audience was laughing except for the man Dee was making fun of. The bald guy needed to lighten up. It was just part of Dee’s act. Everyone cheered enthusiastically as he finished the song and left the floor. Dee was replaced Ginger as she did her portion of the competition.
Ana snuffed out the rest of her cigarette in the ash tray and stuck her hands in her pockets with her thumbs out over the edge. She deliberately moved her arm back so it was resting against the other woman standing next to her.
Jocelyn didn’t move away when she felt Ana move into her. Jocelyn was about the same height as Ana. She moved closer to see the show and pressed her body against Ana’s back. Ana could feel Jocelyn’s left breast against her back and felt a surge of heat through her body. She licked her lips and pulled her hands out of her pockets and rubbed her arms nervously even though she wasn’t cold.
Ana felt an urge to move away from Jocelyn but at the same time wanted to keep feeling this woman pressed against her back in a room full of people. The room felt much hotter than when she first came into the bar.

This story has been hard for me to write out lately but hopefully I'll get more out soon.

I skipped a big scene and wrote this out first. I will write the in-between scene tonight....hopefully.

Ana sat down outside of the Starbucks to wait for Marge to show up. She checked her phone before pulling out her new pack of cigarettes. She slapped it against her palm back and forth packing her smokes before un-wrapping the plastic. She shoved the thin plastic wrapping back into her pocket and then thumbed a cigarette up. Ana figured that since she was about fifteen minutes early she had time to smoke at least one whole cigarette before Marge showed up to yap at her. It’s not that Ana minded, she actually was glad there was someone she could actually talk to that lived in Vegas and didn’t know very much about her past.
Marge had gone to the same college that Ana had for only one year before transferring to Vegas because of her boyfriend. Ana didn’t really know much on the details about the whole situation but Marge had known her after Ana and Suzie had already been dating for about seven months. They were still in their happy dating stage. Ana and Suzie very rarely fought unless it was over whose turn it was to take out the trash or scoop the litterbox from the three cats they owned together.
Ana had moved into Suzie's apartment three months after having met in their psychology class. The two of them had been partnered by the professor for a project on child behavior. They had never spoken to each other before that day. Ana had often stared at her in class and wanted to say something to her but never had the balls to actually do so.
Ana puffed on her cigarette thinking back on the past and how things had been and how things had ended up at where they were now. Her life had changed drastically and not necessarily for the good. Ana had ended up majoring in psychology and started counseling. She had started a counseling job at a middle school a month and a half after moving to Las Vegas. It certainly hadn't been easy to find a job. All the schools had started cutting their budgets because the economy was failing horribly. They decided to hire her because so many kids were starting to act out so much.
Many of the students that Ana listened to bitch about crushes or mean teachers were ones that didn't have a stable home life. A lot of the kids parents were all struggling to keep the bills being paid and had started to work multiple jobs. Moms that had been stay at home moms were all starting to work and ended up working late into the night. There was this new kid, Steven, who had started seeing her once a week since she'd gotten the job. He always had disturbing stories he told her. It was never about crushes, teachers or about his family. He talked about killing small animals and how he wanted to kill something bigger next. Ana knew she needed to say something to Steven's parents about his behavior but she just never had the time.
The front office always kept her schedule so busy. She had to have time to be able to actually keep the student files updated but she never even got ***PORN NOT ALLOWED***minutes. It was always one kid in, back out after half an hour and then another student in about ten minutes. Ana loved it when kids decided to just skip their little counseling session that they had "requested." She knew that the students who came in the most weren't coming to see her because of their problems, they just wanted to ditch class. It seemed that math and English were classes that were skipped the most. Ana needed to mention that to the principal as well. She had a scheduled forty-five minute meeting with him on Tuesday.
"Ana," a soft voice said startling Ana out of her deep thoughts.
"Oh, hey!" Ana stood up quickly and ashed all of her jeans. "Well, fuck."
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. I tried to be quiet since you seemed so in your thoughts, just staring off," Marge replied still in a quiet voice that unnerved Ana just a little bit. Ana felt that people who spoke so quietly had something to hide. Why was that?
"I was thinking about work and what I had to do. I've been so busy at work lately. No time to fit everything into one day, ya know?" Ana said sitting back down after bringing over another chair from a different table.
"I hear you. I've been pretty busy myself. What kind of work are you doing here in Vegas?"
"I'm a school counselor at the middle school up North."
"Oh, what a blast. I wouldn't go work with middle school students unless I was a paid a butt load of money upfront."
Ana chuckled at this and stated, "I don't mind it that much. Most of the kids that come in are just coming in to avoid class. But there are a few that have some real problems and just want to talk things out." Ana thought of Steven in particular when she said this. "How about you? What are you doing now a days?"
"I've been working at the Belagio. I check people into their hotel rooms all day long."
"That must pay pretty nicely," Ana said with a tinge of jealousy in her voice.
"Well it would be paying much better if they hadn't just cut my hours by twenty percent. It's a good thing that my husband is making a very nice check every month."
"That's good at least. It must be rough for you with less hours."
"Actually," Marge started, "I don't mind it too much because it gives me a chance to catch up on house work, bills, and I even have a brief moment to read a new book."
"Fabulous. I haven't had enough patience lately to just sit down for a couple hours and just read. I'd like to. I saw a new Steven King novel came out recently while I was out at the grocery store."
"Oh oh! It's excellent! I sat and read the entire book without stopping. Shit, what's the name of it. It's right on the tip of my tongue." Marge sat and rapped her fingers on the table trying to remember the title of the book.
"I don't remember either but maybe I'll pick it up and try and read it."
"You know, as soon as I leave here I'll remember it as I'm driving home."
Ana smiled and nodded and stared out at the street watching people walk past. Most of them were either on the phone or were tourists taking photos of themselves because they thought it was so cool to take a photo of them standing in front of a las vegas Starbucks. A las vegas starbucks really wasn't any different than any other starbucks anywhere else.
"So, why did you end up moving here, how long ago now?" Ana turned and asked after the silence.
"It's been just over six and a half years now. Mark wanted me to move here and marry him. He said he could get me the job that I have now at the Belagio," Marge started explaining.
"It seems it's working out fairly well for you at this stage in your life," Ana interjected.
"Yes," Marge sighed before continuing. "Things are going pretty well but you know, I dropped school to move here. I haven't been back into school since I married Mark at one of those 24 hour wedding chapels. They don't have those anymore, you know."
Ana looked back at the street and shook her head slowly in response to Marge. Ana noticed a woman walking towards her. It wasn't really walking. Simply saying walking took all the sexiness out of her strut. Ana could hear Marge going on about how she wished she hadn't quit school and how if she had stayed in school she could have a job that wasn't in a casino.
Ana nodded and 'mmhm' at all the right spots and glancing back at marge every now and again. Ana was distracted by this woman who strutted towards her. Ana felt like she was watching this woman, wearing a low cut, short red dress, in slow motion. The dress was laced from between her breasts to half way down her stomach. As she came closer Ana could see the woman's cleavage. Cleavage was an understatement for the breasts that bounced with every step this woman took.
Ana stared openly. She knew she had stopped breathing because this woman looked exactly like Suzie when she had first met her. Ana swore in her mind that this was her dead ex. Her hair was long, still dark, flowing behind her. Her thoughts were confirmed as this woman stopped in front of her. Ana's glance went up from the cleavage up to this woman's face.
"Hello, Ana," the voice was sensual and the look on her face made Ana instantly wet. "Are you surprised to see me?"
Ana sat in her chair and stared up at Suzie, speechless. Ana dropped her eyes down to Suzie's stomach and noticed underneath the laces were deep, still red burns. Ana reached her hand up to feel beneath the laces at the red marks.
Ana knew that if this was truly Suzie standing in front of her then the red lines all came together to show a giant letter 'A'.
Ana turned slightly to marge who was still blabbing away about how she wanted a child or even two but Mark didn't want kids anytime soon. Marge didn't at all seem perturbed that there was this woman standing in front of Ana. Marge knew that they had found Suzie dead in her apartment. She had heard from all her friends that she had stayed in contact with since school.
"Ana," Suzie's voice spoke at Ana again.
"You can't be real. You died."
"Clarification. You killed me. And Lauren. You killed her first when she had jumped out of bed to grab her clothes to leave."
"Why are you giving me that look?" Ana asked clenching and unclenching her fists nervously.
"It bothers you? it never bothered you when I was alive. Why, you were always ready to go for a romp in the sheets every time I gave you this look. It's your weakness." Suzie paused and smirked before continuing, "I bet you're wet right now and I'm not even actually here."
Suzie stepped even closer to Ana and straddled her tugging on her hair with one hand while pressing her palm between Ana's legs with the other.
"No!" Ana yelled standing up quickly."
Marge stopped talking completely and looked at Ana as if she were insane.
"No? I didn't realize you were that against having kids. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you," Marge said looking at Ana with a confused stare.
"What? Kids? Oh, I didn't realize...wait what?" Ana stuttered still breathing hard.
"Are...you ok? You look as if you've seen a ghost." Marge still was staring Ana.
"Ghost? Right. I don't believe in ghosts," Ana said avoiding Marge's look. Other people had stopped in their conversations and their chess games and stared at Ana.
Ana sat down slowly, gripping the chair arm rests for support. She felt weak and frightened. She looked around her but saw no sign of Suzie anywhere. Ana started to relax and breathe normally again.
"So you were asking me about kids?" ana asked Marge as if nothing had happened. She pulled out her pack of cigarettes and lit one, inhaling deep and exhaling slowly.
"Ya, uh," Marge was still startled and looked around her nervously. "I was asking if you ever wanted kids of your own."
"Ha! Unlikely. I have plenty of annoying brats at school. I can barely stand the kids that I see every day. I'm not sure how I would be able to handle my own. Plus, if I really did plan on ever having children, I'd prefer to be in a stable relationship." Ana said.
"Are you out looking to date anyone?"
"Not really," Ana said quietly thinking about how her night with Jocelyn went.
