Joy Sekar

"All dads are dick heads"

Joy screamed and the woman laughed.

"Why do you say so?"

Joy looked at the street. It was busy and crowded. The trees were becoming a rarity in the city of Chennai and so were the buses. The only way Joy could reach T.nagar by 5pm was hitch-hiking.

So she did just that. About half an hour ago she was wiping the sweat off her face, cursing her ill-luck and it was another 20 minutes before this older woman stopped her scooter and gave her a ride.

Joy sighed.

"If I ask him for a scooter he'll get me a bike, if I ask him for sweets he'll get me the best chocolates from New Zealand, if I ask him to goto the theatre to watch a movie he'll build me my own mini theatre at home. He would always give thousand times bigger than what I want"

The woman laughed.

"He seems nice. You shouldn't be complaining about having such a nice dad"

Joy groaned.

"You won't understand. Go and ask the mirror in the lifestyle show room it'll tell you million stories"

----------------------------------------------

LIFESTYLE SHOWROOM
-----------------------------

Joy looks at the tight jeans and tank top. It looked quite good on her. She whistles to herself happily and comes out of the trial room.

Her dad is there holding a boring trouser and a workshirt.

Her Dad shakes his head.

"How does my daughter look in the clothes she is wearing?"

The salesgirl looks surprised but managed to say,

"Young and sexy"

He shows her the boring trousers in his hand.

"If she wears this how would she look?"

The salesgirl answers in a low voice

"Rich and young"

Joy's father looks at Joy and Joy just nods her head in approval of her dad's selection like an obedient little girl and smiles a fake smile.

Inside the fitting room, she almost breaks the mirror pouncing on it.

----------------------------------------------------------------

"Lol. That's quite bad. I can understand the way you feel"

Joy looked annoyed.

"Quite bad? You haven't heard the rest of the story"

"Okay I am all ears"

The woman grinned.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bounce
---------

One of the most famous salons in Chennai. For all you people who don't know where Chennai is, it is in India.

The hairdresser looks at her hair and says,

"You have nice hair. How would you like your haircut?"

Joy shows a feather cut with layers and highlight in the catalogue.

"Good selection"

The hairdresser begins his work and Joy falls asleep half way through it. To her shock, When she opens her eye it is the same old boring hairstyle.

She looks behind and her father lifts his thumbs up and Joy smiles at him suppressing the inbuilt anger.

------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh man, that's very bad"

"I know"

Joy looked at the midday sun.

"But I decided that two things in my life would be my choice and not my dad's"

The woman stopped her scooter and looked at Joy.

"What's that?"

Joy smiled.

"Career and Love"

"Tell me more about it"

The woman looked at her eagerly and Joy looked at the sky dreamily.

"Oh, that is where all my problems started"

-----

FLASHBACK

----------------------------------------------------

Joy was walking in the beach with her friends, Priety, Kunal and Remo.

Priety was going to be engaged very soon.

"So when's the party?"

"Tomorrow night guys and please bring your own bottle of booze"

"Asshole"

Joy laughed.

"I need to go home early and talk to Dad about staying over"

"Still Dad's lil girl?"

Joy frowned and Kunal looked away. He knew when not to piss his friend off.

--------------------

Joy entered her house and she could hear a lovely voice singing. Mother.

She sneaked into the kitchen and listened to her mother. Her mother finished singing and she clapped.

"Mom. You have a bright future in singing"

"Go away"

Her mother said shyly noticing her in the kitchen.

"Agree with me and I'll go away"

Her mother stroked her hair.

"Okay I have a good future. Alright?"

"All the best"

Joy grabbed the cauliflower and gave it to her mother. She laughed and looked at her daughter affectionately.

"I hope you keep smiling like this forever"

"I will ma"

Joy gave her mother a peck in the cheek and ran into her room.

--------------------------------------------------

"Good morning. Wake up"

Subbu, the loyal servant of the house was in Joy's room with a hot mug of coffee.

"Get lost, I'll wake up in the moment I like"

"Ayya is up already"

Joy almost jumped off her bed.

"Is this the moment you like?"

Joy stared at him and went to take a shower. He was right anyway.

----------------------------------

"Will you come to our factory today?"

Joy scratched her neck.

"Dad I am doing a course in Animation. It'll take 3 months to finish"

"Joy, when I asked you first to join our factory you said after University you'll take the responsibility as a board member. After Uni, you said you need six months for a computer course, now you say you need three more months."

Joy looked at her plate not knowing what to say.

Subbu served her the curry and rice.

"For a change, I'll ask you some time"

Joy looked startled.

"Don't we ask time usually? Why is he using my permanent dialogues?"

She whispered to Subbu.

"Do you want me to tell you what I know?"

"Yeah"

Joy spoke to him pretending to fetch a glass of water across the table.

"They're looking for a suitable groom for you"

Subbu whispered back and Joy almost spat what she was drinking.

Let me describe Joy's family. Joy is 21. She has a brother Kumar 24, married and living with his wife, sister Shoba 23 married her husband working in the US and an younger sister Reema 19 and single. Her parents both aged 45 and all of them living under the same roof.

Her father is a multi millionaire and her brother has recently joined the board of members in his father's business.

Shoba was addicted to telephone and reema to make-over. She was a specialist at that.

--------------------------------------------------

Joy was still recovering from what her dad told her.

Kunal was laughing his ass off.

Priety was the only one who knew the seriousness in her tone.

"You're doomed dude"

Remo said smoking his cigarette.

"I want you guys to come and convince my dad"

Remo and Kunal looked at Joy like she lost her mind.

"You think he'll listen to us?"

They looked determined not to meet her dad.

---------------------

"Uncle, Joy is only 21"

Kunal went first gathering all his courage.

Sekar looked at him and shook his head.

"You are 21 Kunal. You are married why don't you advise her?"

Kunal gave up and fell back in the line with the other 3.

Sekar was busy instructing the architect something. They were at the construction site.

"Let me speak to him"

Remo went boldly to speak but before he could start Sekar looked at him

"I hear a lot of complaints about you. Your Dad was telling me a lot"

Remo scratched the back of his neck and fell back in line.

"You went like a big shot asshole"

Priety smirked at Remo.

"As usual we all should nod our head to whatever he says"

Joy looked helpless.

Sekar turned to the four of them and sighed.

"The guy I have seen is a nice fellow. His father is rich and he will be shortly taking over his dad's business. He'll come home in the evening to meet her with his parents. Ask her to get prepared"

FOR SUICIDE.

Joy murmured to herself.

-----------------------------------

Joy was dressed in the traditional sari and was given a tray of coffee to give the groom and his family.

"Don't give up.What if he's the one?"

Priety tried to cheer her up. It looked like it worked.

The groom's people seemed very satisfied with her appearance. Who wouldn't be? She was one hell of a good looker.

Joy looked at the guy. He looked nice. May be just may be there is still hope.

"Let the kids talk. They are the ones going to live together"

"Oh no. My daughter wouldn't disobey .."

Before he could finish he saw that Joy was already half way across the room to talk to the guy.

She stopped midway and looked at her dad embarrassedly.

"Go"

He said disappointedly at her behavior.

-----------------------------------

"Hello"

"Hi"

The guy said shyly looking at the floor.

What the fuck?

"I am Joy"

"Yeah my dad told me"

He said still looking at the floor.

"Do you know what work I do?"

"Yeah. My dad said you are jobless right now"

Joy gritted her teeth.

"Don't you want to talk about us?"

"My dad.."

"Okay. I got it"

Joy walked out of the room trying hard not to slam the door.

Her world was crumbling before her. He was not the one for her. He was brought up just like her, his dad ruling his world. She expected an independent guy who could make his own decisions not him.

------------------------------------

"My Dad told me.."

Joy mimicked the guy breaking the bottle of beer in her hand.

"Joy relax. You had enough to drink tonight"

"Shut up"

Joy grabbed the Vodka bottle from Remo's hand and drank it neat.

Kumar snatched the bottle from her hand.

"Joy, You are a very good person. Nothing bad is going to happen to you"

Joy sneered at him.

"Who said I am good? I am bad, very bad.."

Priety stopped driving and turned to look at her.

"Your dad should hear that"

"Who cares. I am not scared of him. I am a bad person. I have the guts to say it to his face"

Joy screamed.

"Scream a bot louder and he can hear it anyway"

"What?"

Joy jumped up and adjusted her jeans and shirt. They were in her drive way.

"Oh my god"

She quickly sprayed the mouth spray and blew into Remo's face.

"Do I look drunk?"

"No"

The three of them stared at her in astonishment. Where did the brave Joy disappear?

----------------------------

"Joy. You are late"

Sekar was watching tv.

"Sorry dad"

"Uma bring something to eat for Joy"

Sekar called out to her mother.

"No Dad. Not hungry"

"Why did you drink?"

Joy nodded absent mindedly.

"What?"

She asked after a second realising what her father just asked her.

"I asked if you drank coffee or tea . How many times do you want me to tell you it's not good eating outside?"

"Sorry"

Joy squirmed.

"Go and sleep. It's late"

"Okay"

She threw herself on the bed and let the spinning take her into some world where her dad didn't exist.

------------------------------------

The woman was almost near Choolaimedu. Half an hour and she'd be at T.Nagar.

"So did you meet the man of your dreams? Or did you marry the guy your dad suggested?"

Joy smiled.

"No. I am not married yet"

"What happened?"

"I fell in love. That is what happened"

"So you met the man of your dreams"

"Nope"

Joy shook her head negatively.

"I am lost. Indulge me"

The rider adjusted herself on the bike and began to listen sharply while Joy began narrating the roller coaster ride , her life .

FLASHBACK AGAIN

Joy was again somehow tricked into going to Mahabalipuram with the rest of her gang. It is not like she hated those wonderful sculptures and beachside temples, but visiting it for the thousandth time wouldn't be very exciting either.

It took an hour and a half in her dad's BMW to reach the place. As soon as she reached she knew she would never get tired of this place. Every visit made her crave more. Although it was probably centuries old, it looked fresh in her eyes.

She bought the cucumber seasoned with salt and chilli powder and bit into it.

Remo , Priety and Kunal were wearing straw hats and were staring at the monkeys like they've never seen them before.

Priety came up behind Joy after some time and they walked together towards the Pallava temple.

"So what have you decided?" Asked Priety.

"Just marry the guy your dad said. You are never going to fall in love anyway"

Remo answered from behind.

"Don't annoy her Remo"

Kunal retorted.

"What? You guys think I could fall in love just like that?"

"You never make an attempt either" complained Remo.

A group of college girls on tour passed them. Remo whistled.

"You know love could happen anywhere anytime"

Joy frowned at him.

He dramatically held his hand to his chest.

"It's not like I could just like that pick my Mr.Right from this crowd easily"

Just when she said that she almost bumped into someone and said sorry absent mindedly and continued her walking.

"I just bumped into someone you see. I said sorry and it's over. It's not going to lead into something bigger and I am not going to fall in love. All those happens only in movies"

Remo grinned at her, "Cos you bumped into a girl silly. In India girls don't fall in love with girls. Although I would very much appreciate that"

Joy flipped him off with her finger. He was eager as any guy to see some quality girl on girl action.

"The point is I still didn't fall in love with her or he okay?"

They were discussing and wouldn't have even took five steps when they heard someone saying,

"Hey you"

Joy at first ignored it.

"Hey you. Striped shirt.."

Joy turned back when she felt a tap on her shoulders and looked at the girl from the college group.

"Me?"

She asked unsure.

"Yes you"

"What?"

"You just bumped into me"

"Hello..I said sorry . What's the deal?"

She looked at her like Joy grew a third eye.

"You bump into someone and think you can walk off just like that? What about my shirt you spilled my precious coffee on?"

Joy only then noticed her shirt and looked up at the girl big brown eyes – beautiful eyes. In that instant she noticed how beautiful the girl was and how boldly she was standing up for herself. Indian girls normally didn't do that. A smile grew on her.

“Excuse me? Stop smiling and answer me”

Joy could hear some music floating in the air all of a sudden. What the hell? Her heart was fluttering and the girl went on and on. Like some silly romcom, all she could hear was that annoyingly pleasant music and the way the girl's lip moved.

"Hello.. Are you even listening to me?"

Joy was still dazed and the girl gave up. Joy couldn't take her eyes off her, it was like they were glued to her.She turned back on her heels and walked away leaving behind a dumbfound Joy.

Priety, Kunal and Remo shook her and she was still smiling.

"Dude you have no shame. She's scolding you and you're smiling like a jack ass"

"Remo you are a genius. Love can happen anywhere"

"Oh my god. Love at first sight and you have to turn into a lesbian to prove me that it exist"

Kunal sighed.

"She's gone though"

"I have friends who will wander around the streets and find her"

"Who are those idiots?"

"You guys"

Joy tapped on their shoulders leaving them speechless and went searching for the girl in the crowd.

"Her name is Shriya, 18, studying first year of bid medical engineering at the University we graduated from and she is straight as an arrow"

Joy grinned.

"Good work boys"

"Do I get a kiss?"

Remo asked boldly.

"Get over me asshole"

The four of them waited in the car patiently. Joy was squirming in the back seat.

"Whats your problem girl?"

"I don't think this is such a good idea. I feel like a stalker"

Kunal looked at is friend. Young, vibrant, sexy and confident. This was what he was used to for a very long time. Like Remo, even he had a silly crush on her but the beautiful friendship they shared remained even after he grew out of his infatuation. Who wouldn't fall for her? She was gorgeous and mind blowing.

"Excuse me. Are you listening to what I am saying?" Joy asked anxiety eating her up.

"Don't think so"

Priety smirked at Kunal.

"Look there she is. It's now or never"

"Look guys. I am not lesbian"

Remo looked at her like she lost her mind.

"We never said you are"

"I can't do this"

"But you really like that girl"

"I just liked her courage Kunal"

"So why don't you take her out on coffee or something and get to know er better? You guys can atleast be friends right?"

"Okay Okay I am going"

They almost pushed her out of the car.

Joy straightened out her white work shirt which hugged her curves perfectly. She walked to the bus halt where Shriya was talking to other kids from the block. She thoough she was going to faint, heart beating heavier with every step and breath becoming shorter.

"Hey"

She hardly heard herself.

Shriya looked at her unsure of who she was talking to.

"Are you talking to me?"

"Yes I am"

Joy smiled breathing in confidence. She knew she had to try once before she was doomed to marry that retard of a guy.

"Do I know you?"

Shriya asked. She looked even more beautiful than the last time they met.

"Yeah. Mahabalipuram. I knocked your PRECIOUS coffee on your not so precious shirt remember?"

Recognition came over her.

"Oh yeah. You. Wat are you doing here?"

"I just thought I'll apologise for what I did and may be if you have time I could buy you a cup of coffee?"

Shriya looked once over her shoulders at the building and turned back to her.

"Idiot"

She hopped onto the next bus and Joy stayed still. Her pride was stung too bad.

Remo came running to her.

"What happened?"

Joy bit her lips.

"Forget it. "

"Just tell me what happened?"

"She called me an Idiot"

Joy said looking away. Her face looked flushed.

"Oh man"

Remo laughed so hard that Joy wished she could knock him dead.

"That's not funny"

"I am sorry girl. Come ere . Let me tell you something. Don't give up so soon okay? There can't be anyone who won't like you. You are adorable you know that right? "

Joy shook her head negatively.

"Trust me and give it a try just one more time okay?"

"Okay"

St.Joseph's University of Science
----------------------------------------

Prof.Ajit was having trouble with the kids again. He never had one good day at the campus and was put through a lot of teasing because he was bald and dark like the mid night. He was nick named Sliding board by the students at the University.

He walked past a group of students crowded at the campus ground. Just when he passed them he heard the guy at the centre of the crowd say,

"Ask the sliding board to stop taking classes and I'll ask myself not to lie to you anymore"

Ajit went to the kid.

"You are an pig wearing your shirt inside out and she's a donkey who has never seen her face in the mirror since her birth. Why are you pulling my name in your useless love affair?"

The crowd snickered.

"2008 batch was the best batch. They were all obedient, committed to studies and respected me. Especially Joy, she was my pride"

"Hey sliding board Ajit"

A guy called out from the crowd.

"Who called me disrespectfully by my name?"

He looked around.

"He seems to take more offence if you call him by name and completely okay with you calling him sliding board"

Remo told Kunal.

Joy was with them looking around for Shriya.

"Hey Joy I was just talking about you to these disobedient kids. I am sure you came here to visit the library"

"No. I came to see a girl"

The students laughed.

"Ofcourse for something regarding studies right?"

Ajit said hopefully.

"I asked her out for coffee and she called me an idiot."

"There she is"

The students laughed at Ajit and he stood their embarrassedly.

--------------------------------------------

"Hey you"

Shriya turned around to look at Joy.

"What?"

"You can't call me an idiot just because I wanted to be nice to you okay?"

Shriya looked at her seriously.

"Are you kidding me? What if my dad had seen? He would have thought I am probably trying to cut classes again with a friend"

"You have a dad?/"

Joy asked out of nowhere.

"Why are you asking like that?"

Shriya looked at her confusedly.

"Nothing. Forget it. My bad. "

"Is that it?"

Joy turned and walked towards her car.

"Yeah I am sorry"

"Nothing else?"

"What else?"

She didn't stop walking.

"I just thought I'll apologise for what I did and may be if you have time you could me a cup of coffee?"

Shriya asked her voice wavering and not so confident.

A smile grew a mile on Joy's face and she turned back to see Shriya smiling at her.

"So how did you agree to have coffee with a complete stranger?"

Joy asked as she sat in the bus.

"So I can get to know you and you won't be a stranger anymore."

"Good point. Agreed"

Joy couldn't help smiling.

"Where are we going?"

"To Paris corner" said Shriya nonchalantly.

"What? that's like one hr from here"

"Yeah. But they make the best coffee" and like an after thought she asked "So do you take every girl in the city for coffee?"

"No. Just you" Joy smiled.

"Why?"

Shriya asked not looking away.

"Cos you have to like someone to want to spend some time with them"

"Why did you like me?"

Joy smiled at her inquisitiveness.

"Because you seem confident about yourself. You are bold and do what you wnat to do"

Shriya smiled gently.

"You know I have got a thousand friends but nobody has told me what you told me just now"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah"

They continued talking until they reached the coffee shop with constant smile on their faces.

Mercury Cafe, Paris Corner

-----------------------------

"What so special about the coffee here?"

Joy asked as she sat down. She had never been to such a shop before. It's where all the labourers had the tea. Not her kind of people. But Joy liked it.

"Muthu anna (Anna means bro), two cups of coffee please"

Muthu smiled at Shriya.

"Coming dear"

Joy looked at Shriya amazed at her circle of friends.

"You know him?"

"Yeah"

Shriya just shrugged it off.

They had coffee and left until Muthu reminded how her dad had strict curfews.

Joy rode in the bus along with her and dropped her off at her gate.

"I had a good time. Thank you"

"Really?"

"Really" Joy smiled.

Under the moon light Shriya looked even more breath taking.

"So we're friends from now on?"

"Definitely" Joy couldn't stop smiling. This girl was like a drug. Her innocence, individuality, charisma everything was becoming too addictive.

"Give me your no"

Joy wrote down her no in a piece of paper.

"You don't have a mobile no?"

Joy blushed furiously.

"Okay you don't have to answer that"

Shriya said controlling her laugh. The girl before her was too cute and a nice person.

"So I guess I'll see you around then?"

"Don't worry about it. We are friends remember"

Shriya locked the front gate. Joy looked at the disappearing figure and she suddenly remembered something,

"Hey"

Shriya turned on her heels.

"What?" Shriya whsipered making sure not to wake the neighbours up.

"What do you think of me now?"

Joy whispered back

Shriya shook her head in disbelief.

"Idiot" she said, smiled fondly and disappeared into the house.

Joy jumped in joy. She floated back home with her heart in her hand.

Joy was seated in the chair while Reema, her younger sister was doing her pedicure.
"How much is she charging you?"
Kumar's wife Divya asked.
"200 bucks."
"She took 500 from me for shaping my eyebrows" Divya looked at Reema eyes full of accusation.
"Oh forget it. I am her favorite sibling. Ain't I kiddo?"
Reema just nodded happily. She agreed to anything her darling older sister said.

The phone rang twice and almost leaped to the phone to talk to her hubby. The phone went dead just when she said hello.

The phone rang again and Joy answered it this time.
"Hey"
She instantly knew this voice and consequently a huge smile split her face.
"Hey you"
"Sup? I just thought I'd call you and see if you are available to go shopping with me to Spencer mall"
Joy looked around to see if anyone noticed. They were all too engrossed in their work.
"I am very busy now you know. Have lots of work to do"
"Come on. You are jobless anyway right?"
What the fuck.
"Nope I said I am busy and I can't make it"
"Fine then I'll ask Dinesh to go with me"
"Dinesh? Dinesh who?"
Before she could get a response the line went dead and her face grew pale. More like Turned green. Jealousy? Exactly.
Who the fuck is Dinesh now?

----------------------------------------------

Joy dressed in a hurry and hurried to Spencer Mall. No way she was going to lose this girl to some Dinesh.

Spencer Mall was crowded with teens, pretty girls and their itchy boyfriends.

Joy scanned the crowd for the one face that lit her up.

There. Shriya was talking to a guy who was handsome and athletic looking.

Another boom. Pang of jealousy? May be.

"Hey"
She waved. Shriya noticed her and smiled that smile which Joy wishfully thought was only reserved for her.

"Hey. I thought you were busy"
"I finished early. So sup?"
Joy casually looked at the macho guy and smiled at him.
"You must be Dinesh. Hi. I am Joy"
The guy looked confused.
"Dinesh? No I am Khan. Shahrukh khan"
"Sharukh Khan?"
Joy looked at Shriya who was biting her lips holding back a huge smile.
"Yep. Sharukh khan. He wanted to know where the scary house is and I was just helping him out"
Relief.
"Oh. Scary house is straight down and to your left okay? Bye"
Joy almost pushed the guy towards the house.
"Bye angel"
Mr.Sharukhan waved at Shriya.
"Bye"
Shriya sighed dramatically.
"Oh man. This is the third time he called me an angel today. He's cho chweet."
Joy was annoyed beyond belief.
Whatever.

"So where is Dinesh?"
"Don't talk about that asshole" They climbed the escalator to third floor where they were selling Kaleidoscopes.
"Why what happened?"
"I asked him if we can go shopping. He said let's go to a motel it won't be crowded. Cheap bastard"
Joy did the only thing she could. Laugh.
"Not funny"
"Sorry"

The shop where they sold Kaleidoscope was crowded like China.
"I don't think I can go into that crowd"
"Hold on"

Joy broke through the crowd and came back after two minutes.
"Did you get it?"
Shriya asked eagerly.
Joy took the Kaleidoscope out of her pocket.
"Yay"
"How much was it?"
"They had a board which said buy 1 get 1 free. I took 1 free"
Shriya smiled mischievously.

"I thought you were boring. But you are not so bad"
Boring. She thought I was boring?
"I am better than not so bad actually"
"Prove me"
Shriya asked challengingly.
"You tell me what to do. I'll do it"
"Not now. I'll save that for later. Okay?"
She said with a glint in her eyes.

Every minute she spent with her flew away quickly and Joy went back home much more content than she had ever been.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Two days passed.

Joy couldn't find a way to call Shriya as she didn't have her number. She decided to go visit her in the college.

A group of students went past complaining about some sulphuric acid Chemistry teacher.

"What do I tell her if she sees me?"
"Do you want to go out for a coffee again?"
No.
"Okay I think I am gay may be we should kiss?"
Definitely not.
"What do you think about my shirt?"
Disastrous. She already thinks I am boring.
Joy was having her intense monologues in front of Shriya's classroom when she saw a figure jumping out from the window.

Shriya. Joy looked bewildered.
"Hey. What are you doing here? You want to go for coffee? Come let's get out of here before that sulphuric acid sees me"

Joy was speechless.

"What did you come for some important work?"
"Yep"
She managed to say that.

"Okay. I'll wait here for you. Hurry"
Joy went to the ladies washroom.

"What a girl? She just asked me so easily for a coffee while I was battling internal wars to ask her the same. What should I do now? She thinks I came for some important work"

Joy stayed in the toilet for five minutes. She walked out and Shriya was waiting right outside.

She spotted Joy before she could make a big U turn.

"Is this your important work?"
Talk about being embarrassed. What could be worse?

Joy nodded her face flushed.

"Okay let's go"

They went again to Parry's corner to have coffee. This time Joy didn't forget to take down her number.

-----------------------------------------------------

Shriya called Joy and they decided to meet up for lunch.

"So how are things going between you guys?"
"I don't know Remo. She seems so straight. I am afraid if she even knew of the word gay"
"I'll tell you it's best to join your dad's business"
Joy threw a tennis ball at Kunal.
"Asshole. You told me you'll get a bank loan for me long back"
"Hello. You asked for 1 million darling. I am trying my best to talk to my manager about it"
"For a year now?"
"Not that easy. But let's take your file and go see him at around one in the afternoon?"
"Great"

----------------------------------------

The manager agreed to grant her the loan but told her it may take up to two months before the paper works were processed.

"Oh shit"
"What?"
"I forgot Shriya. I was supposed to meet her for lunch"
"Oh Shit"
Priety, Remo and Kunal chorused.
-----------------------------------------------------------

The phone rang once and went dead. It rang again. Joy knew who it must be.

She ran to the phone.

"Hey. I am so-"
"I am sorry Joy"
She's saying my line again. Joy was confused now. Shriya sounded like she was crying.
"I couldn't make it to meet you. I was trying to jump out of the window and my Chemistry prof caught me"
"What?"
Joy was laughing.
"Don't laugh. She made me write so many formulae during break time my hand hurts"
Joy was roaring with laughter now.
"You are not mad at me are you?"
"That's alright. I waited for so long in the afternoon sun you know"
Joy lied.
"I am sorry. I'll make it up to you. Promise. Meet me tomorrow for lunch?"
"Okay"
Joy put the phone down.
"Why are you trying to laugh?"
Muthu asked her.
"Silly. I've never laughed so much in my life before"
Joy went to bed with a smile stapled on her face.

Joy sat under the tree enjoying the breeze. She was waiting in the shopping mall for Shriya to show up.

After a few anxious minutes she spotted Shriya scanning the crowd for her. She looked absolutely gorgeous in a printed wrap around skirt and white v neck top.

"Hey" Joy waved frantically and an asshole behind Shriya flashed her a grin.

'Not you creep' Joy cussed.

Shriya smiled as she spotted Joy and Joy couldn't shrug off the feeling that this smile was reserved for a few special people.

"Hello. I'm so sorry about yesterday" Shriya managed to say taking Joy's hand in hers.

Joy could have won the Oscar for the sad face she made.

"I waited so long you know" She sighed.

"I know I am sorry" Shriya said looking into her eyes almost pleadingly.

"No problem. Where are we going for lunch?" Joy asked admiring how their fingers were intertwined.

"You choose" Shriya smiled letting go off her hand.

"Casa Picola?" Joy asked eagerly.

"You like Italian?" One eyebrow crept into sight over her sunglasses.

"Yeah. You don't?" Joy asked nervously.

"I love it" Shriya said lightly "Come on then, don't let me starve" She tugged her towards the bus stand.

Joy walked happily behind her like a lovesick puppy when she spotted Preity Kunal and Remo in the shopping mall. They had a knowing grin which meant interrogation and trouble.

"Hey guys" Remo grinned at Joy who frowned in response.

"Hello" Shriya replied for her. "You are Joy's friends right?"

"Yeah. I am Kunal, she is Preity and he is Remo"

They got introduced and Joy couldn't wait to get rid of them.

"So where you guys going?" Remo asked snickering lightly.

"Oh I thought I'll make it up to Joy for ditching her yesterday, so we are going for lunch" Shriya said looking at Joy whose face was pale now.

"Oh don't worry. Not like you really ditched her. She came with us to meet the manger about a bank loan and forgot to meet you" Remo replied casually.

"Oh" Shriya kept quiet for a second and then turned to look at her new friend who was looking everywhere else but her.

"May be we should have this lunch later. I have to go back to class anyway" She said shooting Joy an angry look.

"I-I'm sorry I lied. This bank loan thing is so important to me" Joy stuttered not knowing what else to say.

"Listen Joy. I understand. But do you know how miserable I feel for calling you jobless all this time when you were trying so hard to get a loan? You could have told me" Her tone had become cold making Joy squirm.

Preity glared at Remo for starting this.

"Nice meeting you guys" Shriya managed a smile at the rest of them and walked back to her friend's car who was still parked there.

"Shriya please wait" Joy held her before she could get in the car.

"What do you want Joy?" Shriya asked not turning back.

"Listen I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say" Joy said defeated.

After a few aching minutes Shriya turned and looked at her.

"I just want you to be honest with me. Will you do that for me?" Joy nodded and Shriya smiled at the tall girl who looked like a 3 yr old caught with her hand in a cookie jar.

"You smiled" Joy stated "That means we are okay?" She asked hopefully.

"Yes" Shriya said softly. "But I really have to go now. Can we do this lunch tomorrow?"

"No problem" Joy beamed glad that their first fight was already over.

As Shriya was about to open the door the girls in the car rolled down the window and threw multiple questions at Joy and one of them was how her dad was going to react to the tank top Joy was wearing now. That meant only one thing, Shriya has told them.

Shriya was the one to squirm now when Joy raised an eyebrow.

"How in the hell do your friends" Joy turned to look at the girls "Sorry girls no offence" and looked at Shriya before continuing. "How do they know about my controlling dad?"

"T-They asked me who you were and what's going on and I had to tell them something about you and y-your family" Shriya was searching for words carefully.

"What's going on? There's nothing going on, go inside and tell them that" Joy said trying too hard to not raise her voice.

Shriya stayed rooted there. " My dad didn't raise me properly" She said after some time.

"What?" Joy had to resist the smile that was threatening to release.

" I said my dad didn't raise me properly. If he had I'd have known how to keep my mouth shut" Shriya said weakly playing with the stitching of her college bag.

The grin broke in full force now and Shriya smiled back at her.

"Yay, Joy smiled" With that she hugged her gently. They stayed that way for a few seconds longer than the friendly hug girls shared. This hug was a contended hug, a happy, 'I'm really glad to be in this hug now' kind of hug.

"Bye Joy" Shriya whispered and got in the car. Joy could feel her throat go dry. She waved and grinned, grinned and waved even after the car was long gone.

------------------------------------------

"Tell me again" Joy asked eagerly.

"I said it's obvious she likes you" Remo repeated for the thousandth time becoming irritated with himself for starting this in first place.

Joy was borderline drunk and they were at the beach road. Joy stopped a car full of young girls and boys like them.

"Stop stop" She signed.

"What?" One of the boys hissed.

"Congratulate me" Joy demanded.

The equally drunk boy refused to. "What have you achieved?"

Joy looked at Preity accusingly. "You didn't tell him what I achieved?"

Preity who was trying hard to stay sober rubbed her eyes. The boy looked like Lord Krishna to her.

"Oh Lord, she made a girl like her, are we sinners now?" She kneeled and cried.

"Ofcourse not. It's love, love isn't sin" Another drunk girl from the car declared.

"She must be the Lord's wife Radha" Preity convinced herself.

Kunal was having fun watching his drunk friends. He always stayed sober when these three were involved.

"So will you congratulate me or not?" Joy asked pissed now.

"Of course we will" They got off the car congratulated her. Joy decided it was time to ask a third party opinion and she stopped a guy who was riding his old scooter.

"Stop" She stopped him and looked at the vaguely familiar guy.

"Congratulate me" Joy said waving her beer bottle in front of his face.

The man just stared with arms crossed.

"What? Why are you staring asshole?" Remo looked the man who wouldn't wish his friend.

He clipped the back of his head. "Do as my friend says"

The middle aged man just stared and stared.

"He wouldn't congratulate me. You know why? He must be a father too. What would these old people know about love anyway"

Joy spat angrily. Still no word was uttered by the man, he alternated between glaring and staring.

"Let him go Remo, I don't want the oldies blessing anyway, I have the young crowd behind me" Joy pointed proudly at her new drunk friends. They cheered for her when she pushed the man's scooter away.

"Don't come in front of me again" She warned menacingly "I can't stand you" She said and found she couldn't stand and passed out.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day was a bleeding hell as Joy approached the campus to pick Shriya up for the lunch. Her hangover was killing her and to make it worse when she found Shriya, some guy was bugging her.

He said some perverted shit about Shriya and it pissed Joy off. She got into a fight and came back with a bleeding head.

Shriya took her to the hospital and got the cuts stitched.

"You should know who to be friends with" Joy said bluntly through clenched teeth.

Shriya who was waving for a taxi turned to look at Joy.

"I like people Joy. What's so wrong about making friends?" She retorted.

"Because when you don't make the right kind of friends, this only happens, last time he asked you to go a motel with him and look at what happened today" Joy pointed out standing her ground.

"Don't tell me what to do and what not to do" Shriya said her face hardening and eyes narrowing.

"Excuse me? I'm the one who got stitches because of your stupid choices. The least you could do is choose friends who are trustable" Joy nearly yelled.

" What do you mean by choosing friends who are trustable? I obviously make a bad choice according to you. Does that mean I shouldn't even be trusting you considering how bad my choices in friends are?" Shriya asked anger firmly in control outside but pissed as hell inside.

It was surprising how few words can cut you so deep. Shriya was talking about trust, but Joy also found out that she was no more than a friend to Shriya.

"I'm sorry. I was out of line" Joy said her head still reeling from the shock of the realization.

They somehow made it home after some talking and understanding.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shriya had the craving to have an ice cream. It was like as if she was pregnant, but that wasn't possible as she had broken up with her ex boyfriend a splendid six months ago.

She called Joy. Joy picked up the phone and smiled hearing Shriya's voice.

Her day was terrible as her whole family crowded around her and made a fuss about the stitches. Her dad was going to look for a bodyguard for her as she told them she got into a fight with a guy who was about to snatch her handbag.

After all the day's fuss her only relief was this girl's voice. This girl who made her smile despite all the problem lurking over her.

"Hey wanna go for ice cream?" Shriya whispered into the phone.

"Are you mad? It's almost 3 in the morning" Joy whispered back.

"You coming or not"

"No way"

"Fine then , I'll go on my own" Shriya hung up and Joy scratched her neck.

She looked around carefully and decided to do what she used to do as a teenager. Jump over the wall.

----------------------------------------------------------

Joy found Shriya buying ice cream from a vendor not far away from her house.

Shriya smiled at Joy smugly. "You said you wouldn't come"

Joy smiled at her genuinely. " I came right?"

"Yes you did" Shriya lowered her eyes to the floor and then looked back up at her.

"Want an ice cream?" Joy shook her head no.

"Only one choco bar Bala" Shriya told the vendor.

"Bala? You know even his name?" Joy asked quite surprised at how really wide her friendship circle was.

Shriya shrugged and opened her wallet. "Put that away" Joy handed over a 20 rupee note to the guy and began to push Shriya's cycle towards her house.

" This is India, not Singapore. It's not safe for a girl to go alone at this time you know" Joy pointed out calmly.

"I know. I won't do it again" Shriya accepted.

"No. Do it again, but don't forget to call me" Joy smiled and Shriya just gazed at her lovingly.

They walked quietly until they covered the few blocks to Shriya's house.

"Do you want me to walk you back home?" Shriya asked sporting a smile.

"Go" Joy gently nudged her inside and watched Shriya disappear into her house.

She turned back and began to walk, but stopped as a feeling overcame her. She turned back and to her surprise Shriya was standing at the door watching her.

Shriya blushed and walked back near the gate.

"I forgot to give you something" She said as Joy leaned over the gate with hands resting on the iron.

"What?" Joy asked her heart beating thousand times faster than it should.

"This" Shriya pulled Joy gently closer to her pulling her by her shirt, held her face in her hand and turned it the side and placed a light kiss on her cheek.

Joy stood there moments later with her jaws dropped, fingers itching to rub her cheek where she got the kiss to subside the burning.

"Good night" Shriya whispered close to her ears and let her go smiling and looking into her eyes.

Joy couldn't utter a word, she just watched Shriya disappear again and walked back home quite sure that she was lesbian or at least Shriya had the power to make any girl go gay.
