Asteroid Belt
Like the rocks we live on and strive to conquer, we are floating
in an orbit unfit for eternity. We all are. Man, woman
and in-between. We are warped driftwood tangled in a river
of tornados and stars awaiting our final resting places,
hoping that one day we’ll have done enough to become
part of a constellation. Truth is our lights get dim and burn out.
Instead of steel we strengthen our boots with nuclear materials.
Yet silent lie most, while we destroy everything we create,
and especially what has existed before us. Pre-history is doomed.
And we are all politicians, but our governments are rotten.
We poach eggs and ivory tusks with equal gusto. Treasures
that the future can’t replace. And the half-blooded, cold-hearted
prisoners we cell are 90% innocent. Like all of us. Criminals dragged along
by chain-gang policies and money-launderers. Hoarders of flesh and
depression. How did it get this way? We allowed it. Every single sea animal
is contaminated by Mercury. We eat them without fear of our deadliest catch.
We are all wounded. The rain doesn’t cleanse the crusted surface of the planet,
or replenish our dirty ocean. It mists everything with the radioactive
remnants of what we’ve all done wrong. The moon glows yellow,
but is surrounded by a brown ring of fog, and sometimes cries
behind cloud formations while millions of earthlings drown nightly
in liquor because it’s fresher than water. We know that living is bittersweet
when there is so much dusk, but at least there’s still enough dawn
to say goodnight, beat our trivial hearts a little faster,
turn down the radios, shut off our lanterns,
pick up some plastic, and leave this place with some dignity.
Marking our temporary unremarkable territory with grace
right before the asteroid hits.

Oh Karie, you have written "truth speak" that cannot be denied! A truth so sad and heavy that cannot be refuted by the most republican, evangelical, creationist, so and so's that dare to share our air. You have shaped my own thoughts with eloquent words that strike and declare the truth of our world today. No it is not easy, it is not warm and fuzzy, but still I thank you for putting a voice to feelings that overwhelm me every day.

EDA, EDA.... you continue to amaze me. So deep, so eloquent, so sad.
Well written.

this poem blew up and out of me randomly one morning.
guess i had a lot of bottled thoughts on this subject.
i tried to figure out what kind of poem this is and decided it is
a reverse-psychology anti-inspiration poem.
haha. thanks so much for reading and commenting.
