Beware The Slip-Away Forest
We were young-love porcupines,
tar black, spiked, and ragged.
Locked in our backbone sweaters
made of holy-floater barbed wire.
But despite the hard-packed dirt
that lied around our eyes, too wise
to dwell underground like the moles,
we roughed it together nose-to-nose
through tumultuous toxic grasslands
and stepped lightly, paw-by-paw,
over volatile acorn-mines that threatened
our hearts and homes, sometimes sleeping
together, curled up like a spiky ball of yarn.
You and me, we bravely traipsed
the mushroom-clad tree stumps hell-bent
on imploding and sucking our faith into its gooey
obsidian pit. We avoided the twisted beaks
of night-hunters and fended for ourselves
against the fox, the hound, and the foot.
We were young-love porcupines, perfecting
our home one day at a time, loosening
Nocturne’s timid grip on our spikes, and unrolling
ourselves freely for solstice-steamed hearts,
a pair, two-by-two, with hips held like glue,
it felt like forever, we were living an eternity
in the Forever-Stay Fields.
We were.
We were.
