You didn't have to smile at me,
but you did,
and I thank you for that.
Between bagging groceries
and counting the change,
so many of us pretend
the other doesn't exist.
Yet I am already
invisible.
You didn't have to smile at me,
but you did,
and in that moment
I saw something missing:
a softness had replaced
the usual chiseled, jaded stare
of dykes who know
everything there is to know,
lived all there is to live,
and no longer recognize,
acknowledge,
their own.
As you handed me the change,
a dime and two pennies
slipped through your fingers.
I could not help but notice
the black onyx ring
around your fourth finger:
a symbol of so many possibilities
of which
I would never dream
to inquire.

How often do we overlook and take for granted such simple gestures that can bring us back to life and recall warmth for just a second in such a cold world, where more and more we are all breaking off and living in our own as though nobody else exists or deserves to be acknowledged. I love every inch of this and you for taking a moment out to make me feel a little less alone... _________________ shemovesme.wordpress.com
