One Will Have the Night
I dreamt of knives again last night,
One said to the Other.
Ten pretty silver blades,
Suspended in the air as if by magic,
Or madness.
Each knife dancing on pointed end,
On the tips of my fingers.
Turning
Twisting
Turning
Twisting
The Other grumbled, groaned,
Heaved away from grey slumber.
“Why did you do that?”
“I don’t know” the One replied.
But each knife turned and twisted
On the tips of my fingers,
Until the flesh slowly began to peel away.
And all I was left with was
Ten pretty white bones.
The Other rolled over,
And said, in subtle tone…
“You should let me dream for you.”
Whilst returning the knives to the One’s memories:
The child’s hair cut short,
The tail of a lamb severed,
The throat of a fish slit,
The bread cut on the counter,
The edge of a glass tapped.
“I don’t like your dreams” the Other said to the One.
“I don’t like you” the One sighed.
She knew what the Other wanted...
The Other cursed,
Stomped and stamped,
Stormed and screamed and shouted,
As happened every morning.
Until the One could no longer hear herself.
Until the One's only respite could be the night
And her only refuge that same grey slumber.
Now their day could begin.
When there was no One,
And only the Other.
“I dreamt of knives again last night”
One said to the Other.

My word! I agree, darkly brilliant indeed. Btw, when I quote your poem, as I see it here as I am writing this, it is laid out as you intended, not all left justified. Interesting. Anyway, the line "you should let me dream for you" made me feel like when a roller coaster takes a sudden turn. What a line!
The floating knives, the ten pretty white bones, "now their day could begin." It's all briliant, imaginative, provocative, wonderful. WOW.
