Nocturne

(for Topless Scientist)

It was two in the morning in France
Your mother sniping, "Are you still on the phone?"
As we talked on and on
Creating that special confection
That is us.

We played songs for each other;
For you in English,
Then back in German to me
I stood by my side door in the porch light listening.

Oh, dear Florence,
Sweet amazing woman that you are;
I will remember forever when it was two in the morning in France
And I stood in the porch light listening.

No matter where I am, or you are,
Be it over the rainbow or underneath the stars,
I'll be your Lili Marlene
In any language you care to play.

Cookie,

This is beautiful. I feel like I'm listening there with you.
"Vor dem Kaserne / Vor dem großen Tor / Stand eine Laterne / Und steht sie noch davor ..."

Hugs,
Eilidh

Nocturne

Hi Cookie! I’m back from the Old World!

This telephone conversation with you, My Dear, made my trip all worth it, not to mention this superb poem that followed our nightly talk! It was an amazing moment and so wonderful to share with you this old German song, which means a lot to me. Lili Marleen is one of my favorites, the first song I’d learnt to play, with my Grandmother… and now, this poem, and you, will forever accompany me when I recall the tune, those words…

It’s brilliant, so perfectly in line with the song, so perfectly reflecting how we felt when it was two in the morning in France and my old Prussian mother came sniping “Are you still on the phone?”… Yes indeed! Still on the phone, listening to Shay, whose sexy voice sounds much like that of Marlene Dietrich…wie einst, Lili Marleen, wie einst, Lili Marleen…

Thank you so much, Cookie. You are a treasure.

Hey Eilidh, as I was talking to the Cookie that night, we were wondering how many people out there, in 2007, would know that song! Sounds like you might be a little Prussian somewhere too!

HUGS!

Ts

Having grown up with German grandparents certainly helps. Wink

i am not a particularly emotional person when it comes to reading poetic script...but your piece here had me in tears.. it inched quite close to home.

.. thank you .

Chordy,

There were quite a few tears involved in the genesis of this poem, too. Thanks so much for stopping to read and comment.

What a lovely and moving piece! You captured a moment so well, so vividly and beautifully. It is enough to make one's heart skip.
