A Leap of Faith Part Two

It's taken a while, but here's part two...the next installment is already underway, so hopefully I'll have it finished soon.

Part Two

Back at the theater, Erin put her mind back to the business at hand and began putting the finishing touches on one of the sets. She’d left earlier that day thinking that this particular piece of the set was finished, but decided that it still needed a little more embellishment. With her paint brush in hand, she began adding some subtle streaks of color…just enough to compliment the existing color scheme while helping to bring out some of the undertones. Erin’s mind would normally be consumed by her creative efforts, but she noticed that portions of the dream she’d had earlier were starting to seep back into the forefront of her thoughts. Shaking her head in amusement at herself, Erin couldn’t help but smile a bit. The more she thought about her dream, the more she thought about the woman she’d encountered, and allowed herself to linger over the vision of the mysterious woman’s face framing those eyes that she’d been so awed by.

Erin pulled herself away from her daydream when one of her colleagues mentioned the playbills. It suddenly occurred to her that she’d left them in her apartment, and she headed out once again to retrieve them.

--------------

Leah shook her head and tried to clear it of the dream she’d just had. She had no more students to see, but she still had an enormous pile of paperwork to do. After spending a few minutes shuffling through her papers and trying to get her mind focused, she decided that nothing was going to get done unless she took a break and had some coffee. The brisk walk from her office at Julliard to the coffee shop would surely help her shake off her sleepiness…so she thought.

As she walked back down Columbus Avenue toward West 60th Street, Leah’s ever dreaming mind wandered back to the woman she’d met earlier that morning. As quickly as the thought entered her mind, she was reminded that she hadn’t actually met the woman. She’d assaulted the woman with her coffee and didn’t even manage to get her name, she thought as she shook her head at the ridiculousness of the situation.

She approached the popular Columbus Circle Starbucks and her wandering mind was jolted as she spotted the woman she’d seen earlier. Different clothing aside, Leah knew she wasn’t mistaken as she watched the woman and saw her look in her direction.

---------------

Erin looked up and was startled to see the shimmering eyes that had captured so much of her thoughts that day. She found her eyes inexplicably locked on Leah’s as the two seemed to exchange greetings without saying a word. Knowing that second chances like this weren’t commonplace, Erin smiled and approached Leah.

---------------

Leah returned Erin’s smile as she watched her approach, and the two were soon standing face to face. She felt a little apprehensive, though, since introductions weren’t really her forte…especially when followed by such an embarrassing encounter. Her discomfort was soon relieved as Erin took the lead in extending her hand. “We meet again, I see,” she said as she took Leah’s hand in hers and gave it a gentle squeeze, “I’m Erin.”

“I’m Leah, and I promise I’m not armed with anything that might spill on you,” Leah replied with a laugh as she returned the handshake.

Both women laughed, albeit a bit nervously, and Leah continued, “I was just going in to order some coffee, ummm, would you like to join me?” she asked, “It’s my treat, after all…I did ruin your clothes this morning.”

Erin smiled, “Oh, that was no big deal,” she said trying to put that incident aside, “A break would be wonderful.”

With their coffee in hand, Erin and Leah crossed Columbus Circle and walked down Central Park West toward one of the benches overlooking the park. As they sat, Erin asked, “So what is it that you’re taking a break from, Leah?”

Leah felt more and more comfortable with Erin, and she smiled as she explained her role at Julliard and the concerto that she’d been working on. Erin told Leah all about the production she was working on for the New York State Theater, and soon the two women were caught up in a conversation that flowed almost effortlessly. Both were incredibly creative women, and the longer they talked, the more they felt they’d known each other forever.

Before either of them were aware of it, almost two hours had passed since they began their respective “short” breaks. Leah still had a ton of work to do, and Erin was sure that her crew thought she’d been abducted, so the two headed back to their jobs…but not before they exchanged phone numbers. It was clear that neither of them wanted to leave, and they certainly wanted to be able to contact each other later. For the second time that day, the two parted ways…but both felt much better about their interaction this time.
